Product Details

Alternanthera reineckii "Mini" is a compact and beautiful variety of Alternanthera reineckii, known for its small size and colorful foliage. It requires similar care to the regular "Rosanervig," but with a few specific adjustments due to its miniaturized form. Here’s a guide to keeping it healthy:

Lighting

  • Intensity: Medium to high light is essential for the best coloration, especially the red and pink hues. Inadequate light can cause it to revert to green and lose its vibrant color.
  • Light Duration: Aim for 8–10 hours of light per day. If you're using LED lighting, a light that offers a color temperature of around 6500K is ideal.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Prefers water temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F).
  • pH: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water, around 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: While it can tolerate a range of water hardness, it grows best in soft to moderately hard water.
  • CO2: CO2 supplementation helps boost growth and color, though it can survive without it. For best results, consider using CO2 in a tank with high lighting.

Substrate

  • It grows best in a nutrient-rich substrate. Using aquarium soil or a substrate that provides ample nutrients (especially iron) is highly beneficial.
  • You can also use fine gravel or sand as a substrate, but make sure to supplement with root tabs or liquid fertilizers if your substrate lacks nutrients.

Fertilization

  • Liquid fertilizers that contain micronutrients, especially iron, are important to maintain the plant’s vibrant color.
  • Root tabs can be placed in the substrate near the plant’s roots for slow-release nutrients, especially if you're not using CO2 or a nutrient-dense substrate.
  • Regular water column fertilization (with NPK and trace elements) is key to preventing nutrient deficiencies, especially with smaller tanks.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Since Alternanthera "Mini" stays small, it benefits from regular trimming to maintain a compact shape and promote healthy, bushy growth. Prune any leggy or overgrown stems to encourage lateral branching.
  • Trim off yellowing leaves or any dead portions of the plant to keep the plant healthy and prevent it from becoming too leggy.

Propagation

  • Cuttings are the easiest way to propagate Alternanthera "Mini". Simply cut a healthy stem and replant the cutting in the substrate. It will root quickly and grow into a new plant.
  • As with other aquatic plants, propagating by stem cuttings helps maintain the plant’s shape and density.

Tankmates

  • It is compatible with most peaceful fish and other small aquarium plants. Avoid aggressive species or large, fast-swimming fish that might damage the plant.
  • Ensure the plant has adequate access to light and nutrients, especially in aquariums with many other plants.

Common Problems and Troubleshooting

  • Yellowing leaves: This can be a sign of a nutrient deficiency (most often nitrogen, potassium, or iron). Make sure your tank is well-fertilized, and consider adding more iron-based fertilizers.
  • Leggy growth: Occurs when light is insufficient. If the plant starts to stretch out, increase the light intensity or duration.
  • Algae: Algae growth on the leaves can be a problem if the plant is not trimmed regularly. Ensure good water circulation and clean up excess algae growth promptly.

Size and Placement

  • Alternanthera reineckii "Mini" stays smaller than the regular varieties, typically reaching a height of 4–6 inches (10–15 cm). It’s perfect for smaller aquariums or as a foreground or midground plant in a larger setup.
  • Position it in the midground or foreground of your aquarium, depending on your aquascaping design.

By following these care guidelines, your Alternanthera reineckii "Mini" should thrive and bring a pop of color to your aquarium with its unique, vibrant foliage.
