Meet Aponogeton ulvaceus — a graceful, flowing aquatic plant with bright green, lightly ruffled leaves that dance in the current. Originating from Madagascar, this plant is famous for filling aquariums with soft, wavy movement and a lush, tropical look. It’s fast-growing, peaceful, and stunning in community tanks or planted displays.
Unlike many other Aponogetons, ulvaceus is easier to keep and makes a statement without demanding intense lighting or CO₂.
Tank Size: Medium to large tanks (40 L and up)
Lighting: Low to medium light works well
Temperature: 20 – 28 °C
Water Hardness: Soft to medium hard water
Substrate: Nutrient-rich soil or root tabs for strong growth
Placement: Best used as a mid-to-background centerpiece
Give it space — ulvaceus can grow long, arching leaves that stretch beautifully across the water column.
✅ Fast grower when nutrients are available
✅ Benefits from root fertilization or plant substrates
✅ Leaves may die back (dormant phase) — don’t throw the bulb away!
✅ Does well without CO₂, but CO₂ will boost growth
This species naturally grows from a bulb. Simply bury half the bulb in the substrate, pointy side up, and it will start pushing out new leaves.
Completely peaceful and safe for:
✅ Shrimp
✅ Community fish
✅ Snails
Many fish enjoy hiding between the soft leaves, and shrimp love grazing on the biofilm that forms along the surfaces.
Aponogeton ulvaceus typically propagates through seeds or new bulbs rather than cuttings. Most hobbyists simply continue growing the original plant, as one bulb can fill an impressive area.
Aponogeton ulvaceus is famous for going “to sleep.” Every so often, the leaves may melt away as the bulb enters a natural resting period. Give it a few weeks, and new leaves will sprout again — often even larger and stronger than before!
