Halfmoon Betta Male Care Guide (with Compatible Tank Mates)

Halfmoon Bettas are admired for their dramatic tail spread and vibrant colors. With proper care, they thrive in a well-maintained freshwater aquarium.

Tank Setup

  • Minimum Tank Size: 20 liters (more space is better for health and companions)

  • Heater: Required. Keep temperature between 24–28°C (76–82°F)

  • Filter: Low-flow or sponge filter to protect delicate fins

  • Lighting: Moderate, 8–12 hours per day (use a timer for consistency)

  • Substrate: Smooth gravel or sand

  • Decor:

    • Silk or live plants (Anubias, Java Fern, floating plants)

    • Caves, driftwood, or decorations with no sharp edges

    • Optional betta hammock or resting leaf near the surface

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24–28°C (76–82°F)

  • pH: 6.5–7.5

  • Ammonia & Nitrites: 0 ppm

  • Nitrates: <20 ppm

  • Water changes: Replace 25–50% of the water weekly using dechlorinated water

Use a water test kit to keep parameters in check.

️ Diet & Feeding

  • Staple Diet: High-quality betta pellets

  • Treats (2–3 times a week): Frozen, live, or freeze-dried bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia

  • Feeding Frequency: 1–2 times daily, small portions

  • Optional Fasting: 1 day per week helps avoid bloating

‍♂️ Behavior & Compatible Tank Mates

Halfmoon Bettas are territorial, but with the right tank size (30 liters or more), they can live with certain peaceful species. Avoid flashy or fin-nipping tank mates.

✅ Peaceful Tank Mates:

  • Neon Tetras (group of 6+)

  • Ember Tetras

  • Harlequin or Lambchop Rasboras

  • Pygmy or Panda Corydoras

  • Otocinclus Catfish

  • Kuhli Loaches

  • Amano or Ghost Shrimp

  • Nerite or Mystery Snails

❌ Avoid:

  • Other Male Bettas

  • Fin-nippers (e.g., tiger barbs)

  • Guppies (often mistaken for other bettas)

  • Large or aggressive species

Tip: Always observe the betta's behavior closely after introducing new tank mates. Each betta is different in tolerance.

Health & Maintenance

Monitor for signs of illness:

  • Fin rot: ragged or black-tipped fins

  • Ich: small white spots

  • Swim bladder disorder: floating or sinking issues

  • Velvet: dusty gold coating on skin

Keep water clean, warm, and stress-free to prevent disease.
