Also known as the Black Palmeri
The Black Emperor Tetra is a sleek, regal freshwater fish known for its shimmering dark body and subtle iridescent hues. Its calm nature, graceful movement, and striking contrast make it a standout in planted community aquariums.
Minimum Tank Size: 60 litres
Temperature: 23–28°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
GH: 4–10
KH: 2–6
TDS: 100–200 ppm
They thrive in soft, slightly acidic water with gentle flow and dim to moderate lighting. A dark substrate and dense planting will bring out their rich coloration.
Recreate their natural habitat with:
Live plants, driftwood, and leaf litter for a soft, natural look
Open swimming space in the mid to upper water column
Dark substrate to enhance contrast and coloration
Add Indian Almond Leaves for tannins and a natural blackwater effect — perfect for mimicking their South American environment.
Black Emperor Tetras are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet:
High-quality flakes or micro pellets
Frozen or live foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms)
Occasional vegetable-based flakes or spirulina
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily.
They are peaceful and social, best kept in groups of 8 or more to feel secure and display natural schooling behavior.
Ideal companions:
Rummynose Tetras, Corydoras, Rasboras, Dwarf Gouramis, and peaceful shrimp.
Avoid fin-nippers and overly active species that might stress them.
⚠️ Behavioral Note: In small groups, males may display mild dominance or chasing within the school. In groups of 8 or more, these interactions are contained within the group and do not harm other fish.
Breeding is possible in aquariums with soft, acidic water and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. Females scatter eggs, which should be protected from adults. Fry hatch in about 24–36 hours and can be fed infusoria or liquid fry food.
Males: Brighter blue eyes, slightly larger and more elongated body, longer fins
Females: Greenish eyes, rounder belly (especially when carrying eggs), smaller and more compact body
The Black Emperor Tetra’s scientific name Nematobrycon palmeri comes from “Nema” (thread) and “brycon” (to bite), referring to the thread-like extension on the male’s tail fin — a signature trait of this royal species!
