Product Details

Black Marble Swordtails (Xiphophorus hellerii) are a beautiful variety of swordtail fish that are relatively easy to care for, making them suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to care for them:

Tank Requirements

  • Tank Size: Swordtails need a minimum tank size of 20 gallons for a small group, with more space being better. If you plan to keep more than a few fish or want to add tankmates, aim for a 30-gallon or larger tank.
  • Water Parameters:
    • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C).
    • pH: 7.0–8.4 (mildly alkaline).
    • Hardness: 10–28 dGH.
    • Ammonia, Nitrite: Should always be 0 ppm.
    • Nitrate: Keep below 20 ppm for the health of your fish.
  • Water Flow: Moderate water flow is fine, but avoid strong currents, as they can stress the fish.

Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel works well.
  • Aquascaping: Swordtails appreciate plenty of plants and hiding spots. Use live plants like Java fern, Anubias, or Hornwort. Also, include rocks, driftwood, and caves to create a natural environment.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient to support plant growth.

Diet

  • Omnivorous: Swordtails are not picky eaters. They will accept high-quality flake food, pellets, frozen or live food such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
  • Variety: Offer a mix of protein (live/frozen food) and vegetable matter (blanched spinach, algae wafers, or spirulina). This ensures a balanced diet and promotes good health.
  • Feeding Frequency: Feed small amounts 2–3 times a day, and remove uneaten food after a few minutes to avoid water pollution.

Tankmates

  • Compatible Tankmates: Swordtails are peaceful and can be kept with other peaceful species like other livebearers (guppies, mollies, platies), tetras, Corydoras catfish, and snails.
  • Avoid Aggressive Fish: Avoid keeping them with fin-nipping species or overly aggressive fish that might stress them, such as certain cichlids.

Breeding

  • Swordtails are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young rather than laying eggs.
  • Sex Ratio: Keep more females than males, as males can become overly aggressive when there are too few females. A good ratio is 2–3 females for every male.
  • Pregnancy: Female swordtails can be pregnant for about 4–6 weeks before giving birth. You’ll notice their abdomen becoming swollen, and a gravid spot near the anal fin becomes visible.
  • Fry Care: If you want to protect the fry, provide hiding spaces like plants or a breeding box. Fry are small but relatively hardy and can eat finely crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp.

Health & Maintenance

  • Water Changes: Perform regular water changes (about 25% per week) to maintain water quality and prevent the buildup of waste and toxins.
  • Monitor for Diseases: Swordtails are generally hardy but can suffer from common freshwater diseases like ich, fin rot, or swim bladder problems. If you notice any abnormal behavior, like lethargy or abnormal swimming, check the water parameters and observe for signs of illness.
  • Clean the Tank: Regularly remove debris and uneaten food to prevent water pollution.

Unique Traits of Black Marble Swordtails

  • Appearance: The Black Marble Swordtail is known for its dark body with striking marble-like patterns and its elongated sword-shaped tail fin, which is characteristic of the species. Over time, some of these markings may change or become more prominent.
  • Color Variations: Like many other livebearers, the appearance can vary, and the patterning can be influenced by genetics, diet, and environmental factors.

By following these care tips, your Black Marble Swordtails should thrive and bring beauty and activity to your aquarium.
