Meet the Blue Bolt Shrimp (Caridina serrata variant) — one of the most eye-catching members of the Caridina family. Their icy blue and turquoise colouring stands out beautifully in planted tanks, especially against dark substrate. Peaceful, graceful and full of personality, Blue Bolts make any aquarium look like a tiny underwater galaxy.
They do prefer softer, more acidic water, so they’re best suited for shrimp keepers who enjoy creating stable, shrimp-friendly setups.
Tank Size: Minimum 20 L (larger volumes help keep water more stable)
Temperature: 20 – 24 °C
pH: 5.5 – 6.8
Water Hardness: GH 4 – 6, KH 0 – 2
TDS: 100 – 160
Filtration: Sponge filter or gentle flow with a pre-filter guard to protect shrimplets
Substrate & Décor:
Active shrimp soil is highly recommended to keep pH stable. Moss, fine plants, cholla wood and leaf litter create grazing zones and hiding spaces while growing biofilm.
Consistency is everything — even small ammonia or nitrite spikes can be dangerous for Caridina shrimp.
Blue Bolts are omnivores and love:
✅ Biofilm and algae
✅ High-quality shrimp pellets and snowflake food
✅ Blanched vegetables (spinach, zucchini, carrot)
✅ Mineral supplements for strong shells
Feed small amounts a few times a week. They graze constantly, so overfeeding can pollute the water.
Peaceful and friendly, happiest in groups.
For mixed tanks, choose tiny, calm species only:
✅ Ember tetra
✅ Phoenix rasbora
✅ Pygmy corydoras
✅ Otocinclus
✅ Snails are perfect tank mates
Large or nippy fish will see them as snacks — species-only tanks offer the best breeding safety.
Females carry eggs for about 25–35 days.
Babies hatch as perfectly formed miniature shrimp and begin grazing instantly.
Stable, clean water and plenty of biofilm help shrimplets grow quickly and safely.
Blue Bolt shrimp were created by selectively breeding Taiwan Bee shrimp lines. The deeper and richer the blue, the more rare and valuable the shrimp — and no two Blue Bolts develop the exact same shade. Every colony is like a living work of art!
