Female Double Tail Betta Care Guide

(Betta splendens – Double Tail Variant)

Double tail bettas have a split caudal fin, creating the appearance of two separate tails. While this trait is more exaggerated in males, females also display a broader tail base and striking symmetry. They are hardy, curious, and can be excellent solo or sorority tank members with the right care.

Quick Overview

  • Common Name: Double Tail Betta (Female)

  • Scientific Name: Betta splendens

  • Tail Type: Double-lobed tail (two distinct caudal lobes)

  • Size: 5–6 cm

  • Lifespan: 2–4 years (up to 5 with excellent care)

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive

  • Care Level: Easy to moderate

  • Colors Available: Blue, red, white, koi, marble, mustard gas, etc.

Tank Setup

Feature Recommendation
Tank Size 10+ liters (ideal: 20–40 liters)
Filter Sponge or low-flow filter (to protect fins)
Heater Yes — tropical species
Substrate Sand, gravel, or bare-bottom
Décor Live or silk plants, hides, betta hammocks
Lighting Moderate to highlight colors
Tank Lid Required — bettas can jump

Floating plants or surface cover help bettas feel secure and reduce stress.

Water Parameters

Parameter Ideal Range
Temperature 24–28°C
pH 6.5–7.5
Hardness 3–12 dGH
Ammonia/Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrate < 20 ppm
Water Changes 25–50% weekly (depending on tank size)

Double tails can be more prone to fin damage and swim bladder issues due to their body shape. Gentle filtration and clean water are especially important.

️ Diet

Double tail females are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet.

  • Staple: High-quality betta pellets (with high protein content)

  • Treats (2–3× per week):

    • Frozen or live bloodworms

    • Brine shrimp

    • Daphnia

  • Feeding Schedule: 1–2 times daily in small amounts

  • Avoid: Overfeeding — can worsen buoyancy issues

Behavior & Tank Mates

Female double tails are less aggressive than males but still territorial.

Tank options:

  • Solo tank

  • Sorority tank: 4–6+ females, minimum 40 liters, dense planting and hiding spots

  • Peaceful community tank (with caution)

Compatible tank mates:

  • Peaceful species like ember tetras, rasboras, corydoras

  • Snails (nerite, mystery)

  • Shrimp (may be eaten if small)

Avoid:

  • Male bettas

  • Fin-nippers (e.g. barbs)

  • Brightly colored or aggressive fish

Breeding (Advanced)

  • Female double tails can breed with compatible male bettas

  • Breeding double tails may result in higher deformity rates — choose healthy lines

  • Breeding setup must include:

    • 20+ liter tank

    • Bubble nest support (floating plant or leaf)

    • Removal of female after spawning

    • Fry care with infusoria or baby brine shrimp
