Product Details

Echinodorus 'Amazon Sword' Small is a dwarf variety of the classic Amazon Sword plant, known for its hardy nature and attractive, broad green leaves. While it’s smaller in size, it still requires similar care to its larger counterpart. Here’s a guide for keeping your Echinodorus 'Amazon Sword' Small healthy and vibrant:

Lighting

  • Intensity: Prefers medium to high light. It will tolerate lower light but may not grow as vigorously or maintain its compact form. For the best growth and color, provide 8–10 hours of light daily.
  • Light Type: LED, fluorescent, or metal halide lighting works well. Ensure the plant gets sufficient light to maintain its color and shape.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F) is ideal for growth. This range is similar to most tropical fish and plants, making it a versatile choice.
  • pH: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water, around 6.5 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: Tolerates a wide range of water hardness, but it prefers soft to moderately hard water. It's adaptable and can thrive in most water conditions commonly found in aquariums.
  • CO2: Although not strictly necessary, adding CO2 supplementation will boost growth and color, especially in aquariums with high light. Without CO2, it will still grow well but may be slower and less vibrant.

Substrate

  • Echinodorus 'Small' does best in a nutrient-rich substrate, especially one that contains iron, which supports healthy leaf development.
  • A fine gravel, aquarium soil, or specialized aquatic plant substrate works well. If your substrate lacks nutrients, you can use root tabs to provide extra nutrients directly to the plant's roots.

Fertilization

  • Regular fertilization is important for maintaining its health and vibrant color. Use liquid fertilizers that contain macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients. Iron-based fertilizers are especially beneficial for keeping the plant’s leaves green and healthy.
  • Root tabs can be placed in the substrate to provide slow-release nutrients directly to the plant’s roots, especially if the substrate is low in nutrients.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Echinodorus 'Small' benefits from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and promote healthy, bushy growth. Trim any dead or yellowing leaves to improve the overall appearance.
  • If the plant becomes too large or has unwanted growth, you can trim the older leaves or remove excess runners to prevent it from crowding out other plants in the aquarium.

Propagation

  • Runners: Like other Echinodorus species, the Amazon Sword plant propagates by sending out runners. You can cut these runners when they grow long enough and plant the new plants in the substrate.
  • Simply replant the new shoots or let them grow where they are to form new plants.

Tankmates

  • Echinodorus 'Amazon Sword' Small is compatible with most peaceful fish and invertebrates. It makes a great addition to community aquariums.
  • Avoid placing it near fish that are known for uprooting plants or digging in the substrate (like certain cichlids) as they may damage the plant's roots.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

  • Yellowing leaves: This may indicate a nutrient deficiency, typically a lack of iron or nitrogen. Adding liquid fertilizers or iron supplements can help.
  • Leggy growth: If the plant begins to grow tall and thin (rather than compact), it might not be receiving enough light. Increase light intensity or duration.
  • Algae growth: If algae starts to grow on the plant, it could be a sign of too much light or high nutrient levels. Reduce light duration and clean the plant regularly.

Size and Placement

  • Echinodorus 'Amazon Sword' Small typically reaches around 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) in height, making it suitable for the midground or foreground of your aquarium.
  • Due to its smaller size, it works well in small to medium-sized aquariums or tanks with other compact plants. It can be used as a focal point or part of a plant group.

By providing the right lighting, nutrients, and care, your Echinodorus 'Amazon Sword' Small should thrive and become a stunning part of your aquarium, adding vibrant green foliage and a touch of nature to your underwater landscape.
