Echinodorus 'Ozelot green'
Product Details

Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' is a striking, hardy aquarium plant that is part of the Echinodorus family, known for its broad, oval leaves with unique speckled patterns. It’s a great addition to planted aquariums, providing a lush green backdrop or center-piece. Here's a guide to keeping your Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' healthy:

Lighting

  • Intensity: Medium to high light is best for Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green.' While it can survive in lower light conditions, the plant will grow more slowly and may not display its characteristic speckled pattern.
  • Duration: Aim for about 8–10 hours of light per day to keep the plant healthy and ensure it thrives.
  • Type of Light: LED or fluorescent lighting is ideal, with a color temperature of around 6500K to promote strong growth and vibrant coloration.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Prefers water temperatures between 22–28°C (72–82°F), which is typical for most tropical plants.
  • pH: Thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water, typically with a pH between 6.5 and 7.5.
  • Hardness: Prefers soft to moderately hard water, but it is quite adaptable and can tolerate a range of water hardness levels.
  • CO2: While CO2 supplementation is not essential, it can promote faster growth and better color. If you're using high-intensity lighting, CO2 supplementation will help keep the plant healthy.

Substrate

  • Nutrient-rich substrate is essential for this plant to grow well. Aquatic plant soil, fine gravel, or a specialized aquarium substrate rich in nutrients will provide the roots with the necessary resources.
  • If your substrate lacks nutrients, you can use root tabs to provide nutrients directly to the plant's roots, especially for iron and trace elements, which are crucial for the plant's health and coloration.

Fertilization

  • Liquid fertilizers containing macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients, including iron, are essential to promote healthy growth. The speckled coloration of Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' can be enhanced with the right levels of iron and other trace elements.
  • Root tabs are also helpful if your substrate is not nutrient-rich. Place them near the roots to provide slow-release nutrients over time.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Regular pruning is necessary to maintain the plant's shape and encourage new growth. Cut off any yellowing or damaged leaves to prevent the plant from becoming too leggy or overcrowded.
  • The plant can grow quite large in favorable conditions, so trim the older leaves regularly to avoid it outgrowing its space. Remove any long runners or dead leaves to keep the plant compact and healthy.

Propagation

  • Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' propagates by sending out runners (stolons). New plants will form at the end of these runners, and you can cut them off and replant them elsewhere in the aquarium.
  • You can also let the new plantlets grow attached to the original plant until they develop roots, then cut them and transplant them to another part of the tank.

Tankmates

  • Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' is generally peaceful and can coexist with most fish species, especially community fish. However, it’s important to avoid aggressive fish that may uproot or damage the plant.
  • It does well with most peaceful fish like tetras, guppies, and small species of cichlids. Be mindful of herbivores that may nibble on the leaves, though.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

  • Yellowing leaves: This is often a sign of nutrient deficiency, especially a lack of iron or nitrogen. Ensure you’re providing adequate liquid fertilizers or root tabs to meet the plant’s needs.
  • Leggy growth: If the plant starts to grow tall and thin instead of bushy, this is usually caused by insufficient light. Increase the light intensity or duration.
  • Algae growth: If you notice algae growing on the leaves, it could be due to excess nutrients or prolonged lighting. Reduce lighting or clean the leaves gently to remove algae.

Size and Placement

  • Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' can grow fairly large, reaching up to 12–18 inches (30–45 cm) in height, making it best suited for the midground to background of your aquarium.
  • It works well in larger tanks or as a center-piece plant in aquascaping designs. In smaller tanks, it may be best to trim the plant regularly to keep it from outgrowing its space.

By providing the right light, nutrients, and care, your Echinodorus 'Ozelot Green' should thrive and add both beauty and vibrancy to your aquarium with its distinct green leaves and speckled pattern.
