Meet the Golden CRS / Snow White Shrimp (Caridina cf. cantonensis) — the elegant, pure-white cousins of the Crystal Red. These shrimp bring a soft, snowy glow to any aquarium, making them a favourite for aquascapers who love a clean, minimalist style. They’re calm, peaceful and mesmerizing to watch… but they do prefer stable, soft water and reward careful keepers with stunning results.
Tank Size: Minimum 20 L (larger tanks stay more stable and are better for breeding)
Temperature: 20 – 24 °C (cooler water helps them live longer)
pH: 5.8 – 6.8 (slightly acidic)
Water Hardness: GH 4 – 6, KH 0 – 2
TDS: 100 – 160
Filtration: Gentle sponge filter or a filter with a pre-filter guard to protect shrimplets
Substrate & Décor:
Active shrimp soil is highly recommended to stabilise pH. Add moss, plants, cholla wood and catappa leaves for biofilm and hiding spots.
Pro tip: Consistency is everything — sudden parameter changes can stress or kill Caridina.
Golden/Snow Whites are specialized grazers and thrive on:
✅ Biofilm and algae
✅ High-quality shrimp pellets or snowflake food
✅ Blanched veggies like spinach, zucchini or carrot
✅ Mineral supplements for healthy moulting
Feed small portions 3–4 times per week. Their tanks naturally grow food, so less is more!
Peaceful and gentle, best kept in dedicated shrimp tanks.
If mixing with fish, choose calm and tiny species like:
✅ Ember tetra
✅ Phoenix rasbora
✅ Pygmy corydoras
✅ Otocinclus
✅ Snails are 100% safe companions
Fish can eat shrimplets, so species-only tanks give the best breeding success.
Females carry eggs for ± 25–35 days.
Babies hatch fully formed and start grazing immediately.
Stable water, low nitrates and plenty of biofilm are key to increasing baby survival.
An active substrate and consistent maintenance make all the difference.
Golden and Snow White shrimp were developed through selective breeding from Crystal Reds. The cleaner and whiter the shrimp, the more unpredictable their genetics become — one batch might be pure snow… the next might surprise you with red-patterned siblings!
