Tank Size:
Minimum 200L (55 gallons) for one adult.
Better in larger setups, especially if kept with tank mates.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 24–28°C (75–82°F)
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water
Diet:
Omnivorous – they enjoy a variety of cichlid pellets, frozen or live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp), and vegetables like spinach, peas, or zucchini.
A balanced diet keeps their colors vibrant.
Tank Setup:
Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel.
Décor: Provide driftwood, flat stones, and sturdy plants (they may nibble softer ones).
Open swimming space is essential, along with hiding spots.
Temperament:
Semi-aggressive but generally more peaceful than other large cichlids.
Can be kept with similarly sized fish such as other peaceful cichlids, large barbs, silver dollars, or plecos.
Avoid keeping with very small fish, as they may be eaten.
Breeding:
Golden Severums form monogamous pairs.
They are substrate spawners, laying eggs on flat rocks or broad leaves.
Both parents guard the eggs and fry.
✨ Interesting Fact:
The Golden Severum is a selectively bred color variant of the original “Deacon Cichlid.” In the wild, Severums can live up to 10–15 years, and they are sometimes called the “poor man’s discus” due to their similar body shape but easier care.
