Product Details

Hemianthus micranthemoides, commonly known as Baby Tears, is a popular and delicate foreground plant in aquascaping due to its small, vibrant green leaves and ability to form dense, carpet-like mats. This plant requires specific care to thrive in aquariums, but with the right conditions, it can create a lush, beautiful carpet. Here’s a comprehensive care guide for Hemianthus micranthemoides:

Lighting

  • Intensity: Hemianthus micranthemoides requires high light to grow well and form a dense carpet. In low light conditions, it will grow leggy and fail to carpet properly.
  • Light Duration: Provide 8-10 hours of light per day to encourage robust growth. Keep in mind that too much light can lead to algae problems, so balance the duration and intensity appropriately.
  • Type of Light: Use full-spectrum LED lighting or fluorescent bulbs with a color temperature of around 6500K. High-intensity lighting is essential for promoting the dense, low-growing habit characteristic of this plant.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: Hemianthus micranthemoides thrives in tropical water conditions, ideally between 22–28°C (72–82°F).
  • pH: Prefers a slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 6.0–7.5. It can tolerate slightly higher pH levels but grows best in a more neutral range.
  • Hardness: The plant grows best in soft to moderately hard water. While it can tolerate harder water, softer water will promote better growth.
  • CO2: CO2 supplementation is highly recommended for Hemianthus micranthemoides. Adding CO2 will promote more vigorous growth and help the plant achieve a dense carpet, particularly in high-light setups. Without CO2, the plant may still grow but will be slower and less compact.

Substrate

  • Nutrient-rich substrate is crucial for optimal growth. Use fine-gravel, aquatic plant soil, or a substrate designed for planted tanks. A substrate that retains nutrients well will help the plant develop a strong root system.
  • If your substrate isn’t nutrient-dense, consider using root tabs to provide additional nutrients, especially iron and micronutrients, which are important for healthy growth.

Fertilization

  • Liquid fertilizers containing macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients are necessary for this plant’s growth. Regular fertilization helps maintain vibrant green color and healthy growth, especially if you’re supplementing CO2.
  • CO2 supplementation will also enhance nutrient uptake, especially in high-light setups. If you’re not using CO2, regular dosing with liquid fertilizers is essential.
  • Root tabs can be placed in the substrate around the plant’s base to provide additional nutrients directly to the roots, ensuring better root development.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Regular trimming is necessary to maintain a compact, carpeted appearance. Trim back the stems to encourage branching and lateral growth. If left unchecked, the plant can grow tall and leggy, so consistent pruning is key.
  • Remove any decaying leaves to prevent them from affecting the rest of the plant.
  • To promote denser growth, trim the stems and replant the cuttings to fill in gaps in the carpet.

Propagation

  • Hemianthus micranthemoides propagates easily by cutting the stems and replanting them in other areas of the substrate. The plant will quickly form new roots at the cut ends and spread, helping fill in your carpet.
  • You can also allow the plant to spread naturally through lateral growth as it sends out new shoots from the base.

Tankmates

  • Hemianthus micranthemoides works well with most peaceful community fish and small shrimp. It’s often used in nano tanks or aquascapes with small fish like tetras, rasboras, or guppies.
  • Avoid placing it in tanks with larger or more aggressive species that may uproot or disturb the carpet, such as large cichlids or bottom-dwelling catfish.
  • Shrimp and snails (such as Amano shrimp or Nerite snails) make good tankmates, as they help keep the plant free from algae.

Common Issues and Troubleshooting

  • Yellowing or stunted growth: This is often a sign of nutrient deficiencies (especially iron or nitrogen). Ensure you’re dosing the appropriate fertilizers and keeping your water parameters stable.
  • Leggy growth: If the plant is growing tall and sparse instead of staying compact, it likely needs more light or CO2. Increase the light intensity and/or start adding CO2 to improve growth.
  • Algae growth: High light intensity, combined with insufficient nutrients or poor CO2 levels, can promote algae. Regular water changes and algae management are essential, along with a balance of light, CO2, and nutrients.

Size and Placement

  • Hemianthus micranthemoides typically grows to a height of around 2–5 cm (1–2 inches), making it perfect for the foreground of the aquarium.
  • It forms a dense carpet and works well in smaller tanks or as a part of larger aquascapes, providing a natural, grassy texture.

Tips for Successful Growth

  • Spacing: When planting, space individual stems close together (around 1–2 cm apart) to encourage the formation of a dense carpet.
  • CO2 and Light: To achieve the best results in terms of both growth and appearance, supplement with CO2 and provide high light. This combination helps the plant spread quickly and form a compact, lush carpet.
  • Water Changes: Regular water changes are important for maintaining water quality and ensuring that your plant gets fresh nutrients. Use high-quality water and avoid high levels of nitrates and phosphates, which can encourage algae growth.

By providing Hemianthus micranthemoides with the right care—high light, CO2 supplementation, nutrient-rich substrate, and regular maintenance—you can create a beautiful, dense carpet in your aquarium. It’s an excellent plant for foreground aquascaping, offering a delicate, natural look while adding lush greenery to your aquascape.
