Product Details

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the most popular and hardy aquarium plants around. It’s a great choice for aquariums of all kinds due to its resilience, ease of care, and ability to thrive in a range of conditions. It’s especially loved by beginners because of how low-maintenance it is, but also by aquascapers for its versatility in aquascaping designs.

Care Tips for Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus):

  1. Light Requirements:

    • Java Fern prefers low to moderate light. It can tolerate low light conditions, which is one of the reasons it's so beginner-friendly. However, if you want it to grow a bit faster or more vibrantly, moderate lighting can help. Just avoid very intense lighting, as this can lead to algae growth on its leaves.
  2. Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: It thrives in a tropical range, ideally between 72–82°F (22–28°C).
    • pH: Java Fern does well in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of about 6.0–7.5.
    • Hardness: It’s adaptable and can live in soft to moderately hard water.
  3. Substrate:

    • One of the best features of Java Fern is that it doesn’t need to be planted in the substrate. Instead, it can be attached to rocks, driftwood, or decorations using fishing line, super glue gel, or small zip ties. The rhizome (the thick stem-like structure) should never be buried in substrate, as this can cause rot.
  4. Growth Rate:

    • Java Fern has a moderate growth rate. It’s not a fast grower, so it’s perfect for aquariums where you don’t want to be trimming plants constantly. It grows in clumps and can gradually fill in space in your tank over time.
  5. Pruning:

    • You can prune Java Fern by cutting off dead or damaged leaves, but always avoid cutting into the rhizome. New growth will emerge from the rhizome, so damage to it could harm the plant. It’s generally a low-maintenance plant, requiring minimal trimming.
  6. Fertilization:

    • Java Fern benefits from light fertilization, especially if you want it to grow more vigorously. A liquid fertilizer with micronutrients can be used occasionally, but it’s not a heavy feeder. Over-fertilizing can sometimes lead to algae issues.
  7. Positioning in the Tank:

    • Because of its bushy growth, Java Fern works best in the midground or background of the aquarium. It can grow to 8–12 inches in height and forms a lovely, lush backdrop for other plants. Its appearance also contrasts nicely with smaller, finer-leaved plants.

Interesting Facts:

  1. Hardy and Low-Maintenance:

    • Java Fern is incredibly hardy and can survive in a wide range of water parameters. It’s one of the few plants that thrives in low-tech, low-light aquariums and can even grow without CO2 injection.
  2. Propagation:

    • Java Fern can be propagated easily by splitting the rhizome. New plants will grow from small offshoots, which you can separate and attach to new surfaces. It’s a fun and easy way to create new plants for your tank.
  3. Tolerant of a Range of Conditions:

    • It can tolerate slightly acidic to neutral pH, moderate lighting, and varying water temperatures, making it very adaptable and one of the best plants for aquariums that may experience fluctuating conditions.
  4. Algae Growth:

    • While Java Fern itself does not encourage algae growth, it’s a plant that does well in low-light environments, which can sometimes lead to algae taking hold in the tank. Proper maintenance and lighting can help minimize this.
  5. Perfect for Shrimp Tanks:

    • It’s also a great plant for shrimp tanks, as the leaves have plenty of nooks and crannies for shrimp to hide in and graze. The plant’s hardy nature makes it perfect for a shrimp-friendly environment.
  6. Common in Aquascaping:

    • Due to its low maintenance and attractive appearance, Java Fern is widely used in aquascaping. It’s especially valued in tanks with hardscapes (rocks and wood) because it can easily be attached to these surfaces.

Fun Fact:

  • While Java Fern is a fairly common aquarium plant, it's actually native to Southeast Asia and can be found growing on rocks and tree roots in rivers and streams. Its ability to grow in a wide range of environments has made it a favorite worldwide.
