Java Fern 'Microsorum Pteropus'
Product Details

Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the most popular and low-maintenance aquarium plants. Its ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions makes it perfect for beginners, as well as experienced aquarists looking for a hardy, attractive plant that doesn’t require a lot of care.

Here’s the care guide for Java Fern ('Microsorum pteropus'):

1. Light Requirements

  • Low to Moderate Light: Java Fern does best in low to moderate light. It can tolerate lower light levels, and high light may promote algae growth on its broad leaves.

  • Lighting Setup: You don't need strong lighting to grow Java Fern. A 2-3 watts per gallon lighting setup is ideal. LED lights or fluorescent lighting will work well. If placed under low light, its growth rate will slow down, but it will still thrive.

2. Temperature

  • Temperature Range: Java Fern is a tropical plant and does best in water temperatures between 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C). It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 64°F (18°C), but warmer temperatures are preferred for optimal growth.

  • Cold Tolerance: While it can tolerate slightly cooler conditions, prolonged exposure to temperatures below 64°F can stress the plant.

3. Water Parameters

  • pH: Java Fern does well in a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral). It can handle slight fluctuations in pH but generally prefers stable conditions.

  • Water Hardness: Java Fern is tolerant of both soft and moderately hard water. A general hardness (GH) range of 3-8 dGH is ideal, but it can adapt to various water hardness levels.

  • Water Flow: Java Fern prefers low to moderate water flow. It does well in areas with gentle currents, but strong water movement can stress the plant and cause damage to its leaves.

4. Substrate

  • Rhizome-Based Growth: Java Fern grows from a rhizome, not roots, so it’s crucial to never bury the rhizome in the substrate. Doing so will cause the rhizome to rot.

  • Attachment: Attach the rhizome to rocks, driftwood, or any other hard surface using aquarium-safe glue or thread. Java Fern does not require any special substrate since it takes nutrients through its leaves.

  • Substrate Type: You can use gravel, sand, or nutrient-rich substrates. While the plant doesn’t rely on the substrate for nutrients, a rich substrate can support other plants in the tank.

5. Fertilization

  • Light Fertilization: Java Fern will benefit from occasional liquid fertilization, especially if the tank water is low in nutrients. Use a balanced fertilizer with micronutrients, particularly iron, which supports leaf growth.

  • CO₂ Injection: While CO₂ supplementation can promote faster growth and brighter leaves, it is not necessary for Java Fern. It will do well in low-tech tanks without CO₂. However, if CO₂ is used, it will encourage quicker and denser growth.

6. Pruning and Maintenance

  • Slow Growth: Java Fern is a slow-growing plant, which means it doesn’t require regular pruning. However, over time, dead or yellowing leaves should be removed to keep the plant healthy.

  • Propagation: Java Fern propagates naturally by producing plantlets that grow along the edges of mature leaves. These can be removed and attached to other surfaces to propagate the plant.

  • Algae: Algae may form on the leaves if lighting is too intense. To reduce algae, wipe the leaves with a soft sponge or toothbrush, and consider adding algae-eating fish or shrimp to your tank (like Amano shrimp or Otocinclus catfish).

7. Tankmates

  • Community Tank Friendly: Java Fern is an excellent choice for community tanks because it’s generally safe from being eaten by most fish. It does well with species that are peaceful and won’t uproot plants.

  • Avoid Herbivores: Large fish or plant-eating species (e.g., some types of cichlids, goldfish, or certain plecos) may nibble on the plant, so it’s best to avoid these.

  • Shrimp and Snails: Shrimp, such as Amano shrimp, or small snails (like Nerite snails), are good tankmates as they can help manage algae on the Java Fern’s leaves.

8. Growth and Size

  • Size: Java Fern grows to a height of 6-13 inches (15-35 cm), making it suitable for midground or background placement in aquariums. It has long, broad leaves that add texture and visual interest to your tank.

  • Slow Growth: Being a slow grower, Java Fern won’t take over your tank quickly, but it will steadily fill in space and add beauty over time.

9. Common Problems

  • Yellowing Leaves: If the leaves turn yellow, it could be due to nutrient deficiencies (often iron or nitrogen). You may need to provide liquid fertilization or a source of micronutrients.

  • Rhizome Rot: If the rhizome is buried in the substrate, it can rot. Always ensure the rhizome is attached to hard surfaces and exposed to water.

  • Algae Growth: If you notice algae growing on the leaves, it could be due to too much light or nutrient imbalance. Reducing light intensity and adding algae-eating species can help control algae.

Bonus Tip:

  • Scaping with Java Fern: Java Fern is excellent for aquascaping, particularly in low-tech or low-light tanks. It can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or even roots, creating a natural, forest-like appearance in the aquarium. The leaves' texture and dark green color contrast nicely with lighter plants or mosses.

Summary Care Checklist:

  • Light: Low to moderate

  • Temperature: 68°F to 82°F (20°C to 28°C)

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)

  • Water Flow: Low to moderate

  • Fertilization: Occasional light dosing of liquid fertilizers (balanced with micronutrients)

  • Substrate: Attach rhizome to rocks or driftwood (do not bury)

  • Pruning: Remove dead or damaged leaves; propagate by plantlets

  • Tankmates: Peaceful fish, shrimp, and algae-eating species

With these care guidelines, your Java Fern should thrive and enhance the aesthetic of your tank for years to come. Whether you have a low-tech setup or a fully-equipped aquascape, Java Fern is a wonderful addition.
