Ludwigia arcuata – Arched Ludwigia

Ludwigia arcuata is a striking stem plant known for its fine, needle-like leaves that can range from green to vibrant reddish-orange under high light and nutrient conditions. This South American native is popular in aquascaping for adding vertical texture and bold color to the midground or background of aquariums. Its fast growth and vivid coloration make it a favorite for high-tech planted tanks.

Lighting

  • High Lighting: Strong light is essential to bring out red and orange hues. Under low light, the plant remains green and may become leggy with elongated internodes.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22–28 °C; prefers stable, moderate-to-warm conditions.

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, adaptable to slightly acidic to neutral water.

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2–12 dGH) is ideal.

Substrate

  • Nutrient-Rich Substrate: Performs best in aquasoil or enriched substrate. Root tabs can be used if planting in inert gravel.

  • Depth: 5–7.5 cm (2–3 inches) substrate allows strong root development.

CO₂ and Fertilization

  • CO₂: Recommended for faster growth, bushier stems, and brighter coloration.

  • Fertilization: Regular dosing of macronutrients and iron-rich micronutrients supports healthy growth and red pigmentation.

Growth and Maintenance

  • Growth Rate: Fast under high light and CO₂; requires regular trimming.

  • Pruning: Trim top stems to encourage bushier growth and replant cuttings to propagate.

Placement in Aquarium

  • Midground / Background: Works well as a color accent in mid or background areas, adding height and contrast to green carpeting or foreground plants.

Propagation

  • Stem Cuttings: Trim healthy stems and replant in substrate; roots develop quickly, forming new plants.

Water Flow and Circulation

  • Moderate Flow: Helps prevent algae accumulation and ensures nutrients reach all leaves.

Algae Control

  • Prevention: Stable nutrients, CO₂, and lighting reduce algae growth on fine leaves. Avoid excessive light without matching nutrient availability.

Compatibility

  • Community Tank Friendly: Safe with most peaceful fish and invertebrates. Avoid large or digging species that can disturb stems.

With proper care, Ludwigia arcuata will bring vertical structure, color, and dynamic movement to your aquascape, creating a vibrant, eye-catching midground or background display.

Interesting Fact: Under high-light and nutrient-rich conditions, Ludwigia arcuata develops a brilliant red-orange coloration on upper leaves while lower leaves remain green, producing a striking gradient effect. Its needle-like foliage also provides natural hiding spots for small fish and invertebrates, enhancing both aesthetics and ecological balance.
