Also known as the Blue Neon Goby
The Neon Blue Goby is a small, freshwater goby prized for its striking iridescent blue body and peaceful, active nature. Perfect for community tanks with small, non-aggressive species, it thrives in well-oxygenated, planted aquariums with smooth surfaces and gentle flow.
Minimum Tank Size: 40 litres
Temperature: 24–28°C
pH: 6.5–7.5
GH: 4–12
KH: 2–8
TDS: 100–200 ppm
Neon Blue Gobies prefer clean, stable water with gentle flow and excellent oxygenation. They are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular maintenance is essential.
Recreate their natural riverine habitat with:
Sand or fine gravel substrate (smooth surfaces to prevent injury)
Live plants and mosses for cover
Smooth rocks for perching and grazing
Moderate, gentle water flow
They enjoy small hiding spots and shaded areas under plants or driftwood.
Neon Blue Gobies are primarily herbivorous but will accept varied diets:
Algae wafers or sinking micro pellets
Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)
Occasional frozen foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp)
Feed small portions 1–2 times daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom.
Neon Blue Gobies are peaceful and social, best kept in groups of 3 or more.
Ideal companions:
Small Rasboras
Tetras
Corydoras
Small peaceful shrimps
Avoid:
Aggressive or large predatory fish
Species that compete for bottom territory
⚠️ Behavioral Note: They are territorial over small areas of substrate, so multiple hiding places reduce conflicts.
Breeding is challenging.
Typically occurs in flowing streams in nature
Eggs are deposited on smooth surfaces
Fry require small live foods such as infusoria
Most hobbyists maintain Neon Blue Gobies primarily for display rather than breeding.
Males:
Brighter, more intense blue coloration
Slightly larger and elongated fins
More territorial
Females:
Duller blue
Smaller body size
Shorter fins
Neon Blue Gobies are excellent algae grazers and can help control biofilm in a community tank, making them both beautiful and functional additions to planted aquariums.
