Neon Red Gourami Dwarf
Product Details

The Neon Red Gourami Dwarf (also known as the Colisa lalia or Dwarf Gourami) is a stunning and peaceful freshwater fish that’s perfect for small to medium-sized aquariums. Here's how to properly care for them:

1. Tank Size:

  • Minimum size: 40-60 liters.
  • While they are small fish (typically growing to around 5 cm), a tank of at least 40 liters is ideal to give them enough space to swim and explore.

2. Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F).
  • pH: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
  • Hardness: 4-18 dGH (soft to moderately hard water).
  • They are relatively adaptable to various water conditions but thrive best in stable, clean water. Perform regular water changes to ensure water quality.

3. Substrate:

  • Soft, sandy substrate or fine gravel is ideal.
  • Dwarf Gouramis do not dig much, but it’s still important to avoid sharp substrates that might injure their delicate fins.

4. Tankmates:

  • Peaceful nature: Dwarf Gouramis are non-aggressive and do well in peaceful community tanks.
  • Compatible tankmates: Small, peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and small catfish work well. They may also co-exist with shrimp and snails.
  • Avoid: Larger, more aggressive fish that might bully or nip at them. Additionally, avoid keeping multiple males in the same tank, as they can become territorial and aggressive towards each other.

5. Diet:

  • Omnivorous: They will accept a variety of foods, including:
    • High-quality flakes or pellets.
    • Live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
    • Vegetables: You can supplement their diet with blanched spinach, peas, or zucchini.
  • Dwarf Gouramis are bottom and mid-water feeders, but they will also eat food that floats on the surface.

6. Water Movement:

  • Low to moderate water movement is best.
  • They are not particularly strong swimmers, so strong currents can stress them out. A gentle filter with low water flow is ideal for their comfort.

7. Lighting and Plants:

  • Moderate lighting: They prefer a tank with a bit of dimness, so bright lighting should be avoided.
  • Live plants: Provide plenty of plants and hiding spots in the aquarium. Dwarf Gouramis enjoy having some areas where they can rest or hide.
    • Plants like Anubias, Java Fern, and Java Moss work well, and they help create a natural environment.
  • Floating plants can also be used to provide shaded areas where they can hide and feel secure.

8. Behavior and Social Needs:

  • Social fish: Dwarf Gouramis are peaceful but can be shy, especially when housed alone. They are often more active and confident when kept in small groups or with other peaceful tankmates.
  • They enjoy swimming in the middle to top regions of the tank.
  • Males can become territorial and will sometimes chase or display aggressive behavior toward each other, especially in smaller tanks, so it’s better to keep only one male per tank or to have a harem (1 male with several females).

9. Health and Common Issues:

  • Water quality: Ensure the water is clean and well-maintained to avoid common issues such as fin rot and white spot disease (Ich), which can occur in poor water conditions.
  • Gourami Iridovirus: Dwarf Gouramis are sometimes prone to a virus called Gourami Iridovirus, which can cause fading coloration, swelling, and lesions. If you notice these symptoms, isolate the affected fish and consult a vet or fish expert.
  • Stress: Dwarf Gouramis can be stressed by sudden changes in water parameters, overcrowding, or aggressive tankmates, so avoid these factors.

10. Breeding:

  • Mating behavior: Males often build a bubble nest at the water's surface when ready to breed. They will court the female by swimming around her and showing off their colors.
  • Eggs and fry: Once the female lays the eggs, the male will guard the nest and continue to care for the eggs until they hatch. The fry will require infusoria or liquid fry food initially.
  • Separate breeding tank: It’s recommended to keep the breeding pair in a separate tank with calm water, and the male should be removed once the eggs hatch to avoid predation.

Quick Summary:

  • Tank size: 40-60 liters.
  • Temperature: 24-28°C.
  • pH: 6.0-7.5.
  • Diet: Omnivorous (flakes, pellets, live/frozen food, vegetables).
  • Tankmates: Peaceful species, avoid multiple males together.
  • Water movement: Low to moderate.
  • Plants: Live plants and floating plants for hiding and comfort.

With proper care, Dwarf Gouramis will thrive and be a stunning and peaceful addition to your aquarium.
