Product Details

Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) are small, peaceful catfish that are perfect for aquarium enthusiasts, especially those with small tanks. Here’s a detailed guide on how to care for them:

1. Tank Size:

  • Minimum size: 38-57 liters.
  • Although they are small (only about 2.5 to 4 cm in length), they thrive in a group of 6 or more individuals, which requires a bit more space.

2. Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22-26°C (72-78°F).
  • pH: 6.0 - 7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral).
  • Hardness: 2-12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water).
  • Ensure the water is clean and stable; Corydoras are sensitive to poor water conditions.

3. Substrate:

  • Soft substrate is best, such as fine gravel or sand. They like to root around in the substrate, and rough gravel could injure their delicate barbels.
  • Ensure the substrate is smooth and non-abrasive to protect their sensitive barbels.

4. Tankmates:

  • They are peaceful and do well in a community tank.
  • Ideal tankmates include small, non-aggressive fish like tetras, rasboras, and shrimp.
  • Avoid keeping them with larger, aggressive fish that might harass or eat them.

5. Diet:

  • They are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods, including:
    • High-quality sinking pellets or wafers.
    • Frozen or live foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
    • Vegetable matter such as blanched spinach or zucchini.
  • They forage on the substrate for food, so ensure they have access to food that sinks.

6. Water Movement:

  • Mild water movement is preferable, as they are not strong swimmers and can get stressed in strong currents.
  • A gentle filter with an adjustable flow rate will work well.

7. Lighting and Plants:

  • Provide some plants and hiding spots (e.g., driftwood, caves, or rocks) where they can feel safe. They appreciate a well-planted tank with some shaded areas.
  • Moderate lighting is fine for them.

8. Behavior and Social Needs:

  • Pygmy Corydoras are social fish and do best in groups of at least 6 individuals. They are very active, especially during feeding times, and will often swim in schools or explore the substrate.
  • They may not be as bold in small numbers and can be shy without companions.

9. Health and Common Issues:

  • Water quality is crucial. Keep ammonia and nitrite levels at 0, and perform regular water changes to maintain good water conditions.
  • Watch for skin issues, like lesions or white spots, which could indicate parasites or poor water conditions.
  • Barbel erosion can happen if the substrate is too rough, so make sure to provide a smooth surface.

By keeping these care points in mind, you can provide a happy and healthy environment for your Pygmy Corydoras!
