Pygmy Corydoras Care Guide
The Pygmy Corydoras (Corydoras pygmaeus) is one of the smallest and most endearing members of the Corydoras family. These tiny bottom dwellers are full of personality and perfect for peaceful community or nano aquariums.
Tank Size: Minimum 40 L (larger preferred for groups)
Temperature: 22 – 26 °C
pH: 6.0 – 7.5
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2 – 12 dGH)
Substrate: Fine sand is best — they love to sift through it without damaging their delicate barbels
Décor: Add plants, driftwood, and hiding spots while leaving open swimming areas
Pygmy Corydoras are highly social and happiest in groups of 6 or more. They’ll school together in mid-water (unlike most Corydoras that stay on the bottom) and display charming, synchronized swimming behavior.
They’re omnivorous and thrive on a mix of:
Sinking micro-pellets or wafers
Live or frozen foods like daphnia, baby brine shrimp, and bloodworms
Occasional crushed flakes or algae wafers
Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily.
Breeding is similar to other Corydoras species — they scatter eggs on plant leaves or glass surfaces. Males chase females during courtship, and gentle water changes can help trigger spawning.
Unlike most Corydoras that stick to the bottom, Pygmy Corydoras often swim in the middle of the tank! This unique behavior adds extra life and movement throughout your aquarium, making them one of the most fascinating nano fish to watch.
