Ranunculus inundatus – River Buttercup

Ranunculus inundatus, commonly known as the River Buttercup, is a unique and eye-catching aquatic plant admired for its umbrella-shaped, deeply lobed leaves and creeping growth habit. Popular in aquascaping, it’s often used to create texture and visual interest in the foreground or midground of aquariums. Here’s how to care for Ranunculus inundatus in your aquarium:

Lighting

  • Moderate to High Lighting: Strong light encourages compact, bushy growth and prevents legginess. In low light, leaves may grow taller and more spaced out, losing their carpet-like appeal.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 18–26 °C. Prefers stable, moderate temperatures.

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, adaptable to slightly acidic to neutral conditions.

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12 dGH) is ideal.

Substrate

  • Nutrient-Rich Substrate: Thrives in a nutrient-rich base such as aquasoil. Root tabs are recommended if using inert gravel or sand.

  • Depth: A depth of at least 5–7.5 cm (2–3 inches) supports strong root development.

CO₂ and Fertilization

  • CO₂: Highly beneficial for faster growth, denser coverage, and vibrant leaf color.

  • Fertilization: Regular dosing of liquid fertilizers containing nitrogen, potassium, and micronutrients supports healthy growth and prevents yellowing or melting.

Growth and Maintenance

  • Growth Rate: Moderate. Spreads outward via creeping runners (stolons) that form new plants at the nodes.

  • Pruning: Trim regularly to control spread, maintain shape, and encourage new growth from the runners.

Placement in Aquarium

  • Foreground / Midground: Works well as a carpet in the foreground or as an accent plant in the midground. Its distinct leaf shape contrasts beautifully with fine-leaved plants and grassy carpets.

Propagation

  • Runners: Propagates by sending out runners along the substrate. These can be left to spread naturally or separated and replanted for faster coverage.

Water Flow and Circulation

  • Moderate Flow: A gentle to moderate current helps keep leaves clean and prevents debris buildup.

Algae Control

  • Prevention: Maintain a balance between light, nutrients, and CO₂ to avoid algae on the delicate leaf surfaces. Avoid excessive light duration without matching nutrient levels.

Compatibility

  • Community Tank Friendly: Suitable for most fish and invertebrate species. Avoid tanks with heavy-grazing fish or large, digging species that may disturb the substrate or runners.

With proper care, Ranunculus inundatus will form a lush, vibrant green carpet or textured midground display, adding depth and natural beauty to your aquascape.

Interesting Fact: In nature, this plant is found along Australian riverbanks and in shallow ponds, where it adapts to both submerged and emersed growth. In aquariums, it can change its growth pattern—developing more compact and rounded leaves under high light and CO₂, or taller, looser foliage in lower light conditions. Its adaptability and striking leaf structure make it a favorite for aquascapers seeking a distinctive look.
