⚫ Red Rainbowfish (Glossolepis incisus) Care Guide

Also known as the Salmon Red Rainbowfish

The Red Rainbowfish is a stunning freshwater species from Lake Sentani, Papua, renowned for its intense red coloration and active schooling behavior. Males develop deep crimson hues as they mature, making this species a spectacular centerpiece for large planted aquariums.

Tank Requirements

Minimum Tank Size: 200 litres

Temperature: 24–28°C

pH: 7.0–8.0

GH: 8–20

KH: 6–12

TDS: 200–400 ppm

They thrive in clean, well-oxygenated water with strong filtration and moderate flow. Larger tanks help bring out their best color and natural schooling behavior.

Habitat Setup

Recreate their natural lake environment with:

  • Sand or fine gravel substrate

  • Dense live plants along the sides and back

  • Open swimming space in the center

  • Moderate water flow

Bright lighting enhances their coloration, especially in mature males.

️ Feeding

Red Rainbowfish are omnivorous and enthusiastic feeders:

  • High-quality flakes or pellets

  • Frozen foods (brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia)

  • Occasional vegetable-based foods or spirulina

Feed 1–2 times daily with varied foods to support coloration and health.

Tank Mates

Red Rainbowfish are peaceful, active, and social, best kept in groups of 6 or more (with a higher ratio of females to males).

Ideal companions:

  • Other large Rainbowfish

  • Peaceful barbs

  • Corydoras

  • Large peaceful tetras

Avoid:

  • Aggressive or fin-nipping fish

  • Very small or timid species

⚠️ Behavioral Note: Males display to one another with flared fins and intense coloration but rarely cause harm.

Breeding

Breeding is possible in aquariums.

  • Egg scatterers, spawning among fine-leaved plants or spawning mops

  • Eggs hatch in 7–10 days

  • Fry are small and require infusoria, then baby brine shrimp

Adults do not provide parental care.

Sexing / Identification

Males:

  • Larger and deeper-bodied

  • Intense red coloration

  • Extended fins

Females:

  • Smaller

  • Silvery or yellowish coloration

  • More streamlined body

Interesting Fact

In the wild, Red Rainbowfish populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss and introduced species, making captive breeding an important part of conserving this iconic fish.
