Product Details

The Red Zebra Malawi Cichlid (Maylandia estherae), also known as the Red Zebra Cichlid or Esther's Cichlid, is a vibrant and popular species of African cichlid native to Lake Malawi. With its striking red or orange coloration, it's a beautiful and active addition to a cichlid aquarium. Here’s a detailed care guide for keeping Red Zebra Malawi Cichlids:

1. Tank Size:

  • Minimum size: 200 liters (50 gallons).
  • Red Zebra Cichlids are active and territorial fish, requiring a larger space to thrive. A 200-liter (50-gallon) tank is the minimum recommended size for a small group. The larger the tank, the better, as it will reduce aggression and provide ample space for swimming and territory establishment.

2. Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F).
  • pH: 7.5 - 8.5 (alkaline water).
  • Hardness: 10-18 dGH (moderately hard to very hard water).
  • Red Zebra Cichlids originate from Lake Malawi, where the water is hard and alkaline. It is crucial to replicate these water conditions to keep them healthy.

3. Tank Setup:

  • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand works best. Red Zebras are bottom-dwelling fish that may sift through the substrate, so ensure the substrate is smooth to avoid damage to their fins.
  • Rocks and caves: Since Red Zebras are rock-dwelling fish, providing plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding spots is essential. This setup allows them to establish territories and find refuge from other fish when needed.
  • Plants: Cichlids, including Red Zebras, are often rough on plants, but hardier species like Anubias, Java Fern, and Java Moss may survive if secured on rocks or driftwood.
  • Filtration: A strong filtration system is required due to the Red Zebra's waste production. Ensure good water movement while also providing ample hiding spots.

4. Tankmates:

  • Best tankmates: Red Zebra Cichlids are best kept with other African cichlids that share similar water parameters and temperament. Suitable tankmates include:
    • Other Mbunas (e.g., Yellow Labs, Cobalt Blue Zebras, Demasoni Cichlids).
    • Synodontis Catfish (bottom dwellers, good for algae control).
    • Other Malawi cichlids that are similar in size and temperament.
  • Avoid: Peaceful or slow-moving fish like Tetras, Angelfish, or Guppies, as the Red Zebra can be territorial and aggressive, particularly during breeding.
  • Aggression: To reduce aggression, it’s recommended to keep Red Zebras in groups of at least 1 male and 2-3 females. The males can become territorial and aggressive, especially during breeding times, and having multiple females helps diffuse aggression.

5. Diet:

  • Omnivorous: Red Zebra Cichlids are omnivores, and a varied diet is essential for their health.
    • High-quality cichlid pellets or flakes designed for African cichlids should form the base of their diet.
    • Supplement with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia.
    • Vegetable matter: Red Zebras will also benefit from blanched vegetables like spinach, zucchini, and spirulina algae. A predominantly vegetable-based diet is recommended to help reduce aggression and keep the fish healthy.
  • Feeding frequency: Feed 2-3 times a day in small amounts to prevent overfeeding and maintain good water quality.

6. Behavior and Social Needs:

  • Aggressive and territorial: Like many African cichlids, Red Zebras can be territorial, especially males. Providing plenty of hiding places and a larger tank helps reduce conflicts. During breeding, males can become more aggressive and will defend their territories fiercely.
  • Active: These fish are active swimmers and occupy the middle to upper levels of the tank, especially when they are not defending their territory.
  • Breeding: Red Zebra Cichlids are mouthbrooders, meaning the female will carry the fertilized eggs in her mouth until they hatch. Males typically display their brightest colors to attract females during breeding. After mating, the female will hold the eggs in her mouth for about 3 weeks until the fry are ready to swim freely. It’s best to separate the female into a breeding box or a separate tank to protect the eggs from other tankmates.

7. Health and Common Issues:

  • Water quality: Red Zebras are sensitive to poor water conditions. Regular water changes (about 25-30% per week) and a good filtration system are crucial for maintaining their health.
  • Stress: Stress from poor water quality, overcrowding, or incompatible tankmates can lead to health issues. Stress can make them more susceptible to diseases.
  • Common diseases: Red Zebra Cichlids can be prone to the following:
    • Ich (White Spot Disease): Treat with an anti-parasitic medication.
    • Fin rot: Caused by poor water conditions, treat with antibacterial medications.
    • Bloat: Overfeeding or poor diet can cause swim bladder issues. Ensure you feed in moderation and provide a balanced diet.

8. Lifespan:

  • Red Zebra Cichlids typically live for 6-10 years in a well-maintained aquarium. Providing good water quality, a varied diet, and a peaceful environment will help them live a long and healthy life.

Quick Summary:

  • Tank size: Minimum 200 liters (50 gallons).
  • Temperature: 24-28°C (75-82°F).
  • pH: 7.5 - 8.5 (alkaline water).
  • Diet: Omnivorous (cichlid pellets, live/frozen foods, vegetables).
  • Tankmates: Best with other Malawi cichlids (e.g., Mbunas), avoid peaceful species.
  • Breeding: Mouthbrooder (female carries eggs in her mouth until they hatch).
  • Lifespan: 6-10 years.

Red Zebra Malawi Cichlids are vibrant and active fish that can thrive in a community tank with other Malawi cichlids. Their territorial nature requires careful management of tank size and tankmates to prevent stress and aggression. With proper care, they can live a long, healthy life and add brilliant color to your aquarium!
