Roseline Torpedo (Denison) Barb
Product Details

The Torpedo Roseline Barb, also known as the Denison Barb, is a stunning freshwater fish native to fast-flowing streams and rivers in India. It's famous for its torpedo-shaped body and vibrant red and black markings, making it a popular choice for aquarium enthusiasts.

Tank Size:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 208 litres
  • Ideal Tank Size: 284 litres or larger
    • The Torpedo Roseline Barb is an active swimmer and prefers to live in groups. A spacious tank is crucial to provide enough room for them to swim and exhibit natural behaviours.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 22°C to 26°C
  • pH Level: 6.5 to 8.0
  • Water Hardness: 5 to 15 dGH
  • Filtration & Flow: Moderate to strong water flow, mimicking their natural fast-flowing stream environment. A quality external filter is recommended to maintain clean water, as they are sensitive to poor water conditions.

Tank Setup:

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel substrate to mimic their natural riverbed habitat.
  • Decoration: Include rocks, driftwood, and live plants to create hiding spots and add natural décor. However, keep open spaces for swimming.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is ideal. Too much light may cause stress.
  • Cover: Torpedo Barbs are known to jump, so a secure tank lid is essential.

Tank Mates:

  • Compatibility: Peaceful, but very active fish. They do best in a community tank with other fast-moving species.
  • Good tank mates include:
    • Rainbowfish
    • Larger Tetras (e.g., Congo Tetras)
    • Danios
    • Barbs
    • Corydoras Catfish
    • Angelfish
    • Dither fish for Malawi's
  • Avoid: Slow-moving fish or fish with long fins (like Bettas), as the Torpedo Roseline Barb may stress them out by constantly swimming around.

Diet:

  • Type of Diet: Omnivorous
  • Food Options:
    • High-quality flake or pellet food as a staple
    • Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia
    • Occasional plant matter like spirulina-based foods or blanched vegetables (e.g., zucchini or spinach)
  • Feeding Frequency: 2-3 times per day in small portions

Behavior and Temperament:

  • Schooling Fish: They should be kept in groups of at least 5-6 to feel secure and reduce stress.
  • Active Swimmers: They are constantly on the move, so a long tank is preferable over a tall tank to allow for horizontal swimming.

Breeding:

  • Breeding in Captivity: Breeding in home aquariums is rare and challenging.
  • Sexual Dimorphism: Males tend to be slimmer and more vibrant than females, but it's difficult to distinguish between the sexes unless the fish are fully mature.

Common Health Issues:

  • Ich (White Spot Disease): Like many freshwater fish, the Torpedo Roseline Barb can be susceptible to Ich if water quality is poor or they experience stress.
  • Fin Rot or Bacterial Infections: Good water maintenance will help prevent these issues.
  • Sensitive to Poor Water Quality: These fish need clean, well-oxygenated water. Regular water changes (about 25% weekly) are essential.

Lifespan:

  • Average Lifespan: 5 to 7 years, though they can live longer with optimal care.

Final Tips:

  • Tank Maintenance: Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are crucial to keeping these sensitive fish healthy.
  • Acclimation: When introducing them to the aquarium, acclimate them slowly to avoid shock due to temperature or pH differences.

The Torpedo Roseline Barb is a striking and active fish that adds a splash of color and energy to any community tank, but they require a well-maintained environment to thrive.
