Rotala colorata – Colorata Rotala

Rotala colorata is a vibrant stem plant prized in aquascaping for its striking pink-to-red coloration under optimal conditions. With its fine, delicate leaves and upright growth, it adds both movement and a pop of color to the midground or background of planted aquariums. Native to Southeast Asia, this plant thrives in well-maintained, high-light setups and responds beautifully to CO₂ supplementation.

Lighting

  • Moderate to High Lighting: Strong light is essential to bring out the plant’s signature pink and red hues. Under low light, growth is greener and more subdued, and internodes (space between leaves) become longer.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 20–28 °C. Prefers stable conditions for best coloration.

  • pH: 6.0–7.5, with slightly acidic water often producing more intense colors.

  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–10 dGH) is preferred.

Substrate

  • Nutrient-Rich Substrate: Performs best in aquasoil or enriched substrates.

  • Depth: A depth of at least 5 cm (2 inches) allows strong root anchoring and nutrient access.

CO₂ and Fertilization

  • CO₂: Highly recommended to achieve fast, healthy growth and vibrant coloration.

  • Fertilization: Requires consistent dosing of micronutrients and macronutrients, especially iron, to maintain red pigmentation.

Growth and Maintenance

  • Growth Rate: Moderate to fast under high light and CO₂.

  • Pruning: Regular trimming promotes bushier growth and prevents lower leaves from losing light and melting. Replant trimmed tops for fuller, denser clusters.

Placement in Aquarium

  • Midground / Background: Works well as a color contrast plant in the mid to rear sections of the tank. Pairs beautifully with green carpeting plants and fine-leaved greenery for visual balance.

Propagation

  • Stem Cuttings: Simply trim healthy stems and replant into the substrate. Roots develop quickly under proper conditions.

Water Flow and Circulation

  • Moderate Flow: Keeps leaves free of debris and ensures nutrient distribution.

Algae Control

  • Prevention: Keep nutrient and CO₂ levels stable to prevent algae from developing on the fine leaves. Avoid excessive light without adequate nutrient support.

Compatibility

  • Community Tank Friendly: Safe for most peaceful fish and invertebrates. Avoid rough fish that may uproot stems.

With proper care, Rotala colorata will become a show-stopping centerpiece, creating a vivid red-to-pink contrast that draws the eye in any aquascape.

Interesting Fact: The intensity of Rotala colorata’s coloration depends heavily on light, nutrients, and CO₂. In high-tech aquariums, the upper leaves often display a brilliant, almost neon pink, while lower leaves remain green, creating a beautiful gradient effect.
