Rummynose Tetra Care Guide
The Rummynose Tetra (Hemigrammus rhodostomus and closely related species H. bleheri or Petitella georgiae) is a popular and striking schooling fish known for its bright red nose and contrasting black-and-white striped tail. Peaceful and graceful, it’s a favourite among aquarists for its beauty and active group behaviour.
Tank Size: Minimum 80 L (larger for stable schools)
Temperature: 24 – 28 °C
pH: 6.0 – 7.0
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately soft (2 – 8 dGH)
Filtration: Gentle, efficient filtration with good oxygenation
Décor: Dark substrate, driftwood, and live plants to mimic their Amazon habitat
Rummynose Tetras are true schooling fish — happiest and most confident in groups of 10 or more. Their synchronized swimming and tight schooling behaviour are mesmerizing to watch and also help reduce stress.
They are omnivorous and enjoy:
High-quality tropical flakes or micro pellets
Frozen or live foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms
Occasional vegetable-based foods or spirulina
Feed small amounts 2–3 times per day for optimal health and colour.
Rummynose Tetras are sensitive to poor water conditions. Their red nose colour fades when stressed or exposed to unstable water parameters — a natural “indicator” of your aquarium’s health.
The intensity of the Rummynose Tetra’s red nose is not just for show — it’s a natural stress and water quality gauge! When their environment is healthy, their noses glow a vivid crimson, but when stressed or in poor water, it fades — making them the aquarium’s very own “living water testers.” ❤️
