Product Details

The Sawbwa resplendens, commonly known as the Asian rummy nose or Naked Micro Rasbora, is a beautiful and distinctive fish species that exhibits clear sexual dimorphism, where males are much more colourful than females. Here's how to care specifically for male Sawbwa resplendens in an aquarium:

Tank Size:

  • A minimum tank size of 30 litres is recommended for a small group (6-8 individuals). However, a 60 - 100L tank is ideal for a larger group, especially considering their active swimming behaviour.
  • They are best kept in a well-planted tank with open swimming spaces.

Water Temperature:

  • 20-26°C is the ideal temperature range for Sawbwa resplendens. They thrive in cooler, well-oxygenated water, making them suitable for unheated or low-temperature tanks.

pH:

  • The ideal pH for these fish is between 6.5 and 8.0.
  • They prefer soft to moderately hard water, though they can adapt to various water conditions as long as they are stable.

Social Structure:

  • Males of the species display stunning colours, with silver bodies, red snouts, and fins, and are often more territorial or active compared to females.
  • Sawbwa resplendens are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 6-8 individuals, with an even mix of males and females.
    • Males can sometimes be competitive and show off to each other, so having a good balance of males and females will reduce aggressive behaviours.
  • They are peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species, though they may get stressed if kept with larger or boisterous fish.

Aquarium Setup:

  • A heavily planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and soft substrate is recommended. Driftwood and leaf litter can also create a natural, comfortable environment for them.
  • They appreciate a gentle flow of water to mimic their natural habitat of slow-moving streams.

Diet:

  • Sawbwa resplendens are omnivores. In the aquarium, they will eat high-quality micro-pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like daphnia, brine shrimp, and bloodworms.
  • Males, due to their activity levels, should be given a varied diet to maintain their bright colouration and health.

Behavior:

  • Males are more vibrant and active than females, often engaging in displays of colour and energy, especially during mating behaviour.
  • They are generally peaceful, but males may become slightly territorial during spawning periods.

By maintaining stable water conditions and providing plenty of space and plant cover, male Sawbwa resplendens will thrive and show off their brilliant colours, making them a stunning addition to any aquarium setup.
