Product Details

Silver Dollar (Metynnis argenteus) is a popular and striking freshwater fish known for its disc-shaped body and silvery appearance. It's a peaceful species that does well in larger aquariums and is often kept in schools. The Silver Dollar is a great addition to community tanks due to its gentle temperament, but it requires plenty of space to swim freely and thrive.

Key Characteristics of Silver Dollar:

  1. Appearance:

    • Silver Dollars have a round, disc-like body that is silver or metallic in color, often with a slight greenish or blueish sheen. Their flat shape gives them their distinctive, "silver coin" look, which is where they get their name.
    • They have small mouths and large, rounded fins that help them glide smoothly through the water.
    • Their size can vary, but they typically grow to around 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in length, making them a medium-sized fish.
  2. Size:

    • Silver Dollars can grow up to 8 inches (20 cm) in length, so they require a relatively large tank to accommodate their size and swimming needs.
  3. Lifespan:

    • With proper care, Silver Dollars can live for around 10–15 years in an aquarium.

Care Tips for Silver Dollar:

  1. Tank Size:

    • Since they are relatively large fish and are active swimmers, Silver Dollars require a minimum tank size of 55 gallons for a small school of 3–5 fish. For larger groups or if you plan to keep them with other fish, a 75-gallon or larger tank is ideal.
    • A long tank is preferred to provide enough swimming space for these fish to move freely and comfortably.
  2. Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: Silver Dollars are tropical fish, so they prefer a temperature range of 74–82°F (23–28°C).
    • pH: They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.5–7.5.
    • Hardness: They do well in moderately soft to moderately hard water, with a hardness level of 4–12 dGH.
    • Water Quality: Silver Dollars are sensitive to poor water conditions, so keeping the water clean and well-filtered is essential. Regular water changes are important to maintain good water quality.
  3. Diet:

    • Silver Dollars are omnivorous and will eat a wide variety of foods. Their diet can include high-quality flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, daphnia, and vegetable matter like spinach, zucchini, and peas.
    • They also enjoy plant matter, so offering them blanched vegetables and leafy greens can help provide them with the nutrition they need. Keep in mind, however, that they may nibble on aquarium plants, so it's best to keep hardy plants in their tank that can withstand some grazing.
  4. Tankmates:

    • Silver Dollars are peaceful and social fish, so they do best when kept in groups of at least 3–5 individuals. They are a schooling species, and having a group of them helps reduce stress and brings out their natural behavior.
    • They are generally good with other medium to large peaceful fish such as tetras, barbs, rasboras, cichlids, and catfish. However, avoid keeping them with very small fish or fin-nipping species that might stress them out.
    • Keep in mind that they are herbivores to some extent and might nibble on live plants, so choose plants that are hardy and can tolerate some grazing, such as Java Fern, Anubias, and Vallisneria.
  5. Aquascaping:

    • Silver Dollars appreciate open swimming areas, but they also enjoy some hiding spots or dense vegetation where they can feel secure.
    • Provide some plants, rocks, and driftwood for structure, but be prepared for some plants to be nibbled on. It's recommended to use hardy plants like Java Fern or Anubias, as these tend to resist grazing better than more delicate plants.
  6. Behavior:

    • Silver Dollars are typically peaceful and active, often swimming in schools. They are gentle and will not bother smaller fish unless they feel stressed or overcrowded.
    • They are quite social and enjoy the company of other Silver Dollars, as they will form a school and swim together in harmony.

Interesting Facts about Silver Dollar:

  1. Schooling Fish:

    • As a schooling fish, Silver Dollars feel most comfortable when kept in groups. In a school, they are often seen swimming together in a synchronized fashion, which makes for a beautiful display in the aquarium.
    • A school of Silver Dollars can also help reduce stress and make them feel safer in the aquarium, as they are naturally preyed upon in the wild.
  2. Native Habitat:

    • Silver Dollars are native to the Amazon River and its tributaries in South America. They are found in slow-moving rivers and streams, often in regions with dense vegetation where they can graze on plant matter.
  3. Plant Grazers:

    • Silver Dollars are known for their plant-eating habits. While they are primarily omnivores, they will often nibble on aquarium plants, which can be a challenge for aquascaping enthusiasts.
    • However, they are not as destructive as some herbivorous fish, and their plant grazing is typically more moderate compared to species like Plecos or Cichlids.
  4. Not a True “Dollar”:

    • The name "Silver Dollar" comes from the fish's coin-like shape and its silvery color, not from any connection to actual currency. In the wild, they are called "Silver Dollar Fish" due to their appearance.
  5. Relatively Long Lifespan:

    • With proper care, Silver Dollars can live 10–15 years in the aquarium, which is quite long for a fish of their size. Ensuring they have good water conditions, a varied diet, and suitable tankmates will help them thrive for many years.

Fun Fact:

  • The Silver Dollar’s round, silvery body is said to resemble a coin or silver dollar, which is why they are often referred to by that name. Their shape also allows them to dart quickly away from potential predators in their natural habitat.
