Also known as the Morlet’s Loach or Striped Loach
The Skunk Loach is a bold, energetic freshwater loach known for its striking black stripe running the length of its body. While smaller than many loach species, it has a strong personality and is best suited to experienced aquarists who can meet its social and environmental needs.

They prefer warm, clean water with strong filtration and good oxygenation. Stable parameters and regular water changes are essential for long-term health.
Recreate their natural river environment with:
Sand or smooth fine gravel substrate
Driftwood, rocks, and caves for shelter
Open swimming space
Moderate to strong water flow
Dim to moderate lighting helps reduce stress and encourages natural behavior.
Skunk Loaches are omnivorous with carnivorous tendencies:
High-quality sinking pellets or wafers
Frozen or live foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, blackworms)
Occasional vegetable-based foods
Feed 1–2 times daily, ensuring food reaches the bottom.
Skunk Loaches are semi-aggressive and can be fin-nippy if kept incorrectly.
Best kept:
Singly, or
In groups (5+), in larger tanks to spread aggression
Suitable tank mates:
Robust, fast-moving fish
Medium-sized barbs
Larger tetras
Avoid:
Slow-moving or long-finned fish
Very small or timid species
⚠️ Behavioral Note: When kept alone or in small tanks, Skunk Loaches may become overly aggressive. Proper group size and space are key.
Sexing is difficult.
Females may be slightly rounder when mature
No clear external differences in juveniles
Skunk Loaches are one of the most assertive loach species despite their modest size, earning them a reputation as “small fish with big attitude.”
