Product Details

Striped Kuhli loaches (Pangio kuhlii) are a fascinating and peaceful species for freshwater aquariums. They have unique behaviors, are relatively easy to care for, and make great community tank mates. Here are some essential care guidelines for keeping them happy and healthy in your aquarium:

Tank Setup

  • Tank Size: A minimum of 75 liters is recommended for a small group of 5–6 Kuhli loaches, as they are social and prefer to be in groups.
  • Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel is ideal. Kuhli loaches love to burrow, and rough substrates can injure their delicate bodies.
  • Hiding Places: They need lots of cover like driftwood, caves, rock structures, or dense vegetation. PVC pipes or hollow decorations also provide great hiding spots.
  • Lighting: They prefer low to moderate lighting. Dim lighting can encourage their activity during the day since they are naturally nocturnal.

Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 24-30°C. They do well in warmer water but make sure to avoid sudden temperature changes.
  • pH: Between 5.5 and 8.0. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral water.
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderate hardness, around 0-10 dGH.
  • Filtration: They appreciate clean, well-oxygenated water, but ensure the filter intake is covered as they can sometimes get sucked into filters due to their slim bodies.

Diet

Kuhli loaches are omnivores and will eat a variety of foods:

  • Live/Frozen Foods: Bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small, meaty foods are highly appreciated.
  • Sinking Pellets: Since they are bottom dwellers, feed them sinking pellets or tablets that are appropriate for omnivorous fish.
  • Vegetable Matter: Occasionally, they’ll nibble on blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach.

Behavior

  • Social Nature: They are very shy, especially when kept alone. It’s best to keep them in groups of at least 5–6 to help reduce stress and encourage more natural behaviors.
  • Nocturnal Activity: Kuhli loaches are more active during the night. However, in a peaceful environment with dim lighting, they may come out during the day.
  • Peaceful Tank Mates: They are non-aggressive and do well with other peaceful fish like tetras, rasboras, and small catfish.

Tank Maintenance

  • Water Changes: Perform regular water changes of 20–30% weekly to maintain water quality.
  • Avoid Sharp Decor: Since Kuhli loaches are burrowers, avoid sharp or rough decor that could scratch them.

Breeding

Breeding Kuhli loaches in captivity is rare but possible. They spawn in thick vegetation, and the eggs are often green. Providing plenty of hiding spots, creating slightly warmer water, and offering a high-protein diet can help induce spawning, but it can be difficult to replicate the conditions.

Common Health Issues

  • Skin Sensitivity: Kuhli loaches are prone to skin infections and parasites like Ich due to their scaleless bodies. Keep an eye on water quality and make sure to quarantine new fish.
  • Stress: They can become stressed if kept alone or in poor water conditions, which makes them more susceptible to illness.
