X-Ray Tetra
Product Details

The X-ray tetra (Pristella maxillaris) is a popular freshwater fish known for its translucent body, which gives a glimpse of its skeleton. This unique feature, along with its peaceful nature, makes it a favorite among aquarium enthusiasts. Here’s a guide to properly care for X-ray tetras in your aquarium:

1. Tank Size

  • Minimum Size: A 30 litre tank is the minimum recommended size for a small group, though larger tanks (60 litres) are ideal to allow them to swim freely.
  • Group Size: X-ray tetras are schooling fish and thrive best in groups of at least 6. A larger school will help them feel secure and bring out their natural behaviors.

2. Water Parameters

  • Temperature: 22-28°C
  • pH: 6.0-8.0 (they prefer slightly acidic to neutral water)
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard (2-15 dGH)
  • Filtration: Maintain clean water with a gentle filter, as X-ray tetras prefer calm waters.

3. Tank Setup

  • Substrate: Fine gravel or sand substrate works well. Avoid sharp edges that could injure the fish.
  • Plants: Live plants like Java fern, Anubias, or Amazon swords create a natural habitat and provide hiding spots.
  • Lighting: Moderate lighting is sufficient. Avoid overly bright lights, as they can make the fish feel exposed.
  • Decorations: Include driftwood, rocks, and caves to mimic their natural environment and give them places to explore or hide.

4. Feeding

  • Diet: X-ray tetras are omnivores. In the wild, they feed on small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter. In an aquarium:
    • Offer high-quality flake food or micro-pellets as a staple.
    • Supplement their diet with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to enhance color and health.
    • Feed 2-3 times a day in small portions that they can finish within a few minutes.

5. Behavior and Tank Mates

  • X-ray tetras are peaceful and can coexist with other non-aggressive species. Good tank mates include:
    • Other small tetras (e.g., neon tetras, cardinal tetras)
    • Corydoras catfish
    • Guppies, mollies, or dwarf gouramis
    • Avoid aggressive or fin-nipping fish, as tetras can become stressed in such environments.

6. Breeding

  • Breeding X-ray tetras in captivity is possible but requires specific conditions:
    • Set up a breeding tank with slightly acidic water (pH around 6.0) and a temperature of around 25°C.
    • Provide a spawning mop or fine-leaved plants where they can lay eggs.
    • After spawning, remove the adults, as they might eat the eggs. The eggs usually hatch in 24-36 hours.

7. Maintenance

  • Perform regular water changes (about 20-30% weekly) to maintain optimal water quality.
  • Keep an eye on ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels. X-ray tetras are sensitive to water quality, so it's essential to keep these parameters in check.
